Information on the conference
Responsible fisheries in the marine ecosystem.
Reykjavík, Iceland Oct.1st.-4th.

· The conference is jointly organised by the FAO and the Icelandic and Norwegian governments. The aim is to improve global understanding on sustainable and responsible use of marine resources and the marine ecosystem that they are part of.

· The conference has been under preparation for more than 2 years. The idea arose during the visit of the President of Iceland and the Minister of Fisheries to the FAO in Rome in 1998. The conference is held at The University Cinema (Háskólabíó) Oct.1st.-4th.

· The purpose of the conference is to gather the best scientific knowledge on the subject, and to discuss how to include ecosystem considerations in the management of living marine resources. The goal is to outline in a political Declaration the ways and means to promote the ecosystem approach.

· Delegates are near 400 from more than 85 countries. Almost all the largest fishing nations in the world have a national delegation at the conference. 14 ministers responsible for fisheries are expected to attend the conference.

· There are three main parts of the conference. The opening on Monday morning, is in two parts. The former where the General Secretary of the FAO Jaques Diouf, the Icelandic Foreign Minister Halldór Ásgrímsson and the Norwegian Fisheries Minister Otto Gregussen give speeches. The second part of the opening, is where the stage will further be set with four overview presentations.

· Monday afternoon the scientific symposium begins. There are three sessions in this part, the first dealing with the dynamics of the marine ecosystems. The second with the role of man in marine ecosystems, and the third on how to incorporate ecosystem considerations in management of living marine resources.

· The third part is the intergovernmental conference where national delegations discuss their views on the ecosystem approach. The intent is that the Conference adopts a declaration that will be submitted to the World Food Summit and the World Summit on Sustainable Development, the Rio+10.
