Research

Marine research has been conducted in Icelandic waters for over a century. It is fundamental to the fisheries management and forms the basis for the Ministers decision on a yearly total allowable catch. The Marine Institute, established in 1965, has a threefold role,

  • to acquire knowlegde of the living marine resources and the marine enviornment around Iceland
  • to provide advice to the government on catch levels and conservation measures
  • and to inform the government, the fisheries sector and the public about the marine environment and its living resources.

Matís is a dynamic R&D company which offers various services for the food industry in Iceland and abroad. It employs many of Iceland’s most competent scientists in the field of food technology and food research: food scientists, chemists, biologists, engineers and fisheries scientists. Furthermore, many M.Sc. and Ph.D students are doing research at Matís and working on their theses there. Around 100 people work at Matís. Matís was established by a legislation enacted in 2006 and involved the merger of three public food research institutes: The Icelandic Fisheries Laboratories (IFL), which was an independent food research institute, operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Fisheries Matra which was a joint venture of IceTec and the Agricultural Research Institute (ministries of Industry & Agriculture) The research division of the Environment and Food Agency, which operated under the direction of the Ministry for the Environment. Matis also operates Prokaria, a private biotechnology company and Iceprotein, a protein production company.
